Officials canceled a UK dog show after allegations that event organizers awarded prizes to dogs with cropped ears.

From the BBC, the event was an international dog show organized by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) UK. Significantly, the event was previously slated to take place in Coventry, but that event was also canceled.

Instead, ABKC organizers intended to have their dog show over the weekend in Manchester. However, “after careful consideration and extensive consultation with local authorities, police, and the RSPCA,” said a venue spokesperson, “we have come to a mutual decision to cancel this weekend’s ABKC dog show”.

UK dog show is turning away from ear cropping

Although some dog owners see it as a minor cosmetic treatment, ear cropping has long been denounced as unnecessary and cruel. Along with tail docking, these procedures have historical roots but are no longer significant or reasonable. In the UK specifically, both procedures are illegal under the Animal Health and Welfare Act.

However, that hasn’t stopped certain breeders from continuing the practice. In fact, the recent cancellation came on the heels of a BBC investigative report into extreme dog breeding In that report, journalists discovered a secret market for dogs bred with abnormal physicalities, as well as cropped ears. Notably, many of these unethical breeders use these dogs as vessels to launder money from illegal drug and firearm sales.

Ear cropping not for celebration

On behalf of the RSPCA, Dr. Samantha Gaines told the BBC she was “really pleased” to hear the event had been canceled. “We raised our concerns with the center and, after considering the impact of holding this event, they have listened and done the right thing.”

Additionally, Dr. Gaines reiterated that ear cropping was a “painful, unnecessary procedure” and should not be celebrated. “Sadly…too many people still think this is a desirable cosmetic trait and inflict this on dogs for no other reason than for the look,” she added.
