Simon, a rescue Basset Cattle Dog, has assumed the title of honorary Dog Mayor of New York City. The city’s canine enthusiasts witnessed a unique electoral process, where tails wagged, and paws were put to the ground in support of their preferred pooch. The ceremony held at City Hall had both barks and laughter echoing through the air as Simon took his oath of office.

A wholesome video uploaded on Instagram shows Simon’s historic inauguration as New York City’s Dog Mayor. Dressed in a stylish winter coat and tie, the rescued Basset Cattle Dog made his way to the front of City Hall, exuding charm and confidence. The ceremony was not only a celebration but also a pun-filled affair, thanks to New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
The advocate humorously asked Simon if he pledged to uphold the office with “dog-mity” for all. Williams sealed the deal with a paw-shake, further emphasizing the city’s light-hearted approach to this charming tradition. As the event unfolded, Simon graciously accepted the responsibilities of his predecessor, Sally Long Dog.
Simon’s victory brought celebration, but not without controversy. The race turned unexpectedly fierce when cryptocurrency enthusiasts rallied behind Bertram the Pomeranian, even launching a digital currency, BERT coin, to boost his chances — per New York Post.
This unusual strategy intensified the competition, creating a tense atmosphere that led some candidates, like Enzo the Shih Tzu, to withdraw amid rising negativity. Despite the turmoil, Simon’s campaign — led by his owner, Sophie Vershbow — stayed focused on positivity, ultimately winning hearts and securing the title.
Simon will not tackle his mayoral duties alone. Pepper, a mini chocolate Dachshund, will step in as Deputy Mayor to support him. Together, they aim to advocate for animal fostering and adoption, using their platform to raise awareness and funds for organizations dedicated to these causes across New York City.
