Dear Labby: Dog breath is coming between me and my pup

Dear Labby,

I absolutely adore my little pound hound and would never want to do anything to hurt her feelings. But she has disgusting breath and whenever she tries to lick me on my lips, I turn my head away. Do you think she takes it personally?

Dear Beagle’s Unsavory Tongue & Teeth Makes Overt, Unbridled Togetherness Hard

My guess is that your dog is much less offended by your giving her the cheek than you are by her foul exhalations. You shower her with attention, provide plenty of opportunities for physical and mental exercise, and make sure she gets proper medical treatment, right? That’s what she understands.

A reminder: Dental care is a huge — and often overlooked — piece of your pup’s overall good health. Halitosis can be an indication of more serious issues so a checkup with her vet is recommended. In the meantime, preventive efforts are key. Don’t forget to brush her teeth regularly, B.U.T.T. M.O.U.T.H., and schedule annual oral examinations. She’s not the only one who will breathe easier.
