The last week of September is National Dog Week and that’s why you may notice your social feeds have literally gone to the dogs!
National Dog Week isn’t a new holiday, it was started in 1928 by Captain William Lewis Judy. The Captain was a World War I veteran who also published Dog World Magazine. 2018 marks the 90th anniversary of celebrating National Dog Week. That’s something to really bark about! Captain Will Judy was a constant champion of our K-9 companions and wanted the world to take a week each year to celebrate the special bond we share with our pups and celebrate all the different ways dogs make human life better.
Back in a time when most dogs were tied to trees out in the yard, never seeing the inside of their Master’s home, he asked people to take their dogs off the tethers and give them space to roam and join the family in activities. He really wanted dogs to be a part of the family and now they really are.

You’ll probably notice many rescue groups offering special adoption deals this week and one of the best ways to celebrate National Dog Week is to help find a home for a homeless dog in a shelter or with a rescue group, so get out there and share those pups on your social media!
Adopt
If you can’t adopt a dog right now, encourage friends to adopt.
Donate
If you have any old blankets or dog toys, donate them to your local shelter. If you have time to donate – most shelters really need dog walkers so visit your local animal shelter and find out how you can get involved.
