Can Dogs Eat Mayonnaise? Is Mayonnaise Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat mayonnaise? Maybe you’ve wondered about this if your dog begs while you’re fixing yourself a lunchtime sandwich and slathering some mayonnaise on a slice of bread. If humans can eat mayonnaise, can dogs safely eat it too?

There is no short yes or no answer as to whether dogs can eat mayonnaise safely. Technically, the ingredients that make up mayonnaise are not toxic or poisonous to dogs. But being that mayonnaise is a high fat condiment, it’s really not something that you should actively add to your dog’s diet on a regular basis.

As always, you must ask your regular vet before sharing any human food with your cherished pooch, including mayonnaise. Here’s what you need to know about mayonnaise and dogs.

When Is Mayonnaise Okay For Dogs To Eat?

Mayonnaise is made up of ingredients including eggs and neutral-flavored oils that are not usually considered to be poisonous to a dog. So if your dog steals a bite of bread coated in mayonnaise, you don’t necessarily need to worry straight away.

But due to mayonnaise’s less-than-healthy nutritional makeup, it might be worth trying natural yogurt or even lower-fat cottage cheese as an alternative if you’re caring for a canine who wants to snack on something dairy-based.

While mayonnaise is not poisonous to dogs, it’s a very high-fat condiment. If your dog continually eats high fat foods, they could find themselves on a path to canine obesity, which in turn can lead to issues with their joints and their heart. Obesity can also bring on serious conditions like diabetes.

So while you shouldn’t panic or worry too much if you notice that your dog has snacked on some mayonnaise, it’s important to make sure this doesn’t become a regular habit. Moderation really is key when it comes to figuring out if your dog can eat mayonnaise safely.
