Commander was a gift to the former president from his brother James Biden and sister-in-law Sara Biden. The First Family introduced their new pet amid great fanfare in December 2021. However, soon after, the reports of several biting incidents came to light, forcing Commander’s exit from the White House to an unknown location.

At the time, Elizabeth Alexander, the first lady’s communications director said in an emailed statement, “Commander is not presently on the White House campus while next steps are evaluated” while adding that the president and first lady “remain grateful for the patience and support of the US Secret Service and all involved, as they continue to work through solutions.”
