Steven Schild was in for a surprise when he brought home his beloved pet, Nala, after four weeks of training at a kennel. Not only was the canine pregnant but she was also infected with Giardia. The parasite can cause gastrointestinal issues and usually spreads when dogs consume the feces of infected animals.

Moreover, Nala is only eight months old, so her pregnancy was quite unexpected by her owners. The pet parents sent their puppy to Savage River Kennel in January, and she stayed there for four weeks before returning home pregnant and sick.

Per the contract, the kennel was supposed to notify the owners of the first sign of heat, which they weren’t, per KTRE. However, the contract mentioned they don’t take responsibility for breeding in their facility if a female pup is in heat.

The contract also states that the kennel isn’t responsible if the canines are pregnant. So, it won’t be taking on the cost of a litter of puppies.

Per KPIC, the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Companion Animal Equine Program’s program manager, Jason Smith, was concerned that the kennel hasn’t renewed its license for a few years now. However, it continues doing business as usual.

The unlicensed kennel had a pet dealer license that expired in March 2021. It also had a kennel license that expired in March 2023. While the kennel’s pre-license application was approved, the department still awaits its license fees.

Smith also clarified that the kennel wasn’t on the bad side before their license expiry. It simply stopped caring to meet the requirements.
