On June 2, a police officer shot a dog in Toledo, Ohio. While the stray didn’t die, they were severely wounded. Moreover, the police didn’t retrieve the canine and left them in the public park. Due to a kind samaritan, the dog was found and taken to a shelter.
Toledo police officers shoot dog and leave before trying to find them
Last Sunday, the Toledo Police Department received a call from a woman when she spotted a stray sitting near a bench at Willys Park. However, instead of waiting for a dog warden, the police officer approached the canine. When the stray charged at them, the police officer shot the dog.
A woman who saw the incident told WTVG that another police officer with a bigger gun shot the dog a second time. Her statement matches the shelter’s, which also noted that the stray was shot twice. After the gruesome incident, the canine ran into the woods and couldn’t be found.
Videographer Aaron Collins took the matter into his hands when he saw the police couldn’t find the dog even after 20 minutes. However, it took Collins only 10 minutes to find the canine. He had to look in the wooded area where the stray was hidden from everyone’s eyes. The freelance videographer stated it wasn’t an impossible task. Moreover, the dog was bleeding profusely, so it was hard to miss the hiding spot.
It took Collins about 45 minutes to coax the stray out of the woods. Then, they were taken to the Lucas County Canine Care and Control. Unfortunately, the canine’s condition was quite bad, and they had to be euthanized. Moreover, the videographer noted that the dog was extremely sweet to him. The entire incident was quite upsetting, considering it could have been avoided.
Moreover, not only did the police officer approach the stray without waiting for the dog warden, but they also turned off their body camera. So, there is no footage of the police shooting the dog.
