Dogs and cats have a reputation for being natural rivals, but in reality, many end up forming strong, if sometimes reluctant, friendships. While some dogs are eager to befriend their feline housemates, cats often take their time warming up to the idea. A recent viral video perfectly captures this dynamic, as a playful rescue dog tries his best to convince a cat to play — only to be met with classic feline indifference.
Instagram video shows rescue dog trying to bond with cat
An Instagram video posted by user @cactustherescue shows the adorable yet one-sided effort of a rescue dog named Cactus as he tries to befriend Miso, the household cat. The clip begins with Cactus approaching Miso’s cat tree, where the British Shorthair is perched comfortably. Clearly excited, the puppy stands on his hind legs, placing his front paws on the tree in an attempt to get Miso’s attention.
Their owner, watching the interaction unfold, gently discourages the overly enthusiastic pup. “Cactus, no. That’s Miso’s tree. I know you want to say hi,” he says, trying to set some boundaries. Undeterred, Cactus starts nibbling on the cat tree, prompting another reminder from the owner: “No, you don’t chew on Miso’s tree. That’s his nest.”
Meanwhile, Miso remains perched above, watching the dog with a mix of curiosity and mild suspicion. At one point, he even lifts his paw slightly, as if contemplating whether to give Cactus a warning swat. Noticing the cat’s reaction, the owner reassures the feline by saying, “He just wants to say hi to you.” Eventually, Cactus backs off and retreats to the couch, only for Miso to suddenly jump down from his tree. The moment the pooch sees this, he excitedly approaches again, eager for another attempt at play—just as the video ends.
In the video’s comments section, many people related to the cat’s hesitation, with one commenter joking, “Poor Cactus will learn once Miso bops him in the head.” Another wrote, “I’m desperate for them to become best buddies.” Some viewers pointed out how Miso stayed in his spot, seemingly enjoying the high ground advantage. Others reassured the owner that, with time, the two pets would likely bond.
