Video: Owner Shares How Her Dog Keeps Her Humble While Playing Fetch

Fetch is one of those classic dog activities that humans assume they’re in charge of. You throw the ball, your pup gleefully chases it, and the game continues until one of you is tired — usually you. However, not every pooch plays by the rules. Some dogs, it seems, have discovered a loophole. If they wait long enough, you’ll get it for them. That’s the situation one Golden Retriever owner found herself in during a game of fetch with her dog, and the hilarious moment was caught on video.

Olly, a young Golden Retriever, has earned himself a reputation as a canine with a clear sense of entitlement. In the video, Olly is sitting on top of a large rock with a tennis ball tucked in his mouth. After a moment, the ball slips from his mouth and rolls to the ground below. Instead of jumping down to retrieve it, Olly simply looks over at his human like he is waiting for her to fetch the ball for him.

What makes the moment even funnier is the on-screen text, where Olly’s owner offers a glimpse into what she’s thinking. She describes the situation with a mix of humor and mild exasperation. “There’s nothing more humbling,” she writes, “than watching your golden drop his ball from his throne, make eye contact, and know—without a word—that you’ve been summoned.” It’s a moment that speaks volumes without Olly making a sound.

She clarified that the standoff wasn’t due to any physical limitation. “Not because he can’t reach it… but because you’re trained. Not him,” the text continues. It’s her way of acknowledging the reversal of roles in this game of fetch, where she’s clearly the one following orders. The final caption sums it up with wry acceptance: “I’ve created a monster.”

Viewers were quick to pick up on Olly’s behavior and didn’t hold back. “All royalty needs servants,” one user wrote. Another joked, “Do your job hooman, make yourself useful,” as if Olly had personally issued the command. One comment nailed the vibe with, “I don’t even know who’s the owner at this point.” Another gave voice to Olly himself, saying, “It is too hard ta jump off dis rock.”
